Last December, the codecentric Digitization Labs team presented the Solingen Sports App it had recently developed. The first contact between codecentric and the Solinger Sportbund (Solingen Sports Association, SSB) was established through personal connections. A strong development team from Bosnia, consisting of Ivan Perkučin, Dejan Biljecki, Mladen Todorović and Bojan Aleksić, worked alongside Andreas Ebbert-Karroum from Solingen, who acted as product owner and developer. Jovanka Bobić (Novi Sad) supported the team with the design. To date, 36 sports clubs have already published their offers, ranging from A(erobics) to Z(umba). We talked to Bojan Aleksic from the project’s developer team.
“The project started at the beginning of October, 2018, as part of our 20% time in the Labs-1 team. The idea was to redesign and migrate the existing mobile application to the newer platform, as well as creating a dashboard web platform for content management”, as Bojan Aleksić recalls. Bojan is part of the Digitization Labs team and based in Doboj, Bosnia.
Remote work for a local project
But how did the remote development team manage to meet the requirements of the SBB and future app users, despite the fact that only one of the team members was actually located in Solingen? “One of our team members [Andreas Ebbert-Karroum] is from the Solingen office, so we already had some knowledge about the Solingen sports community from the very beginning”, Bojan says. “Also, we had great help from the management team of Solinger Sportbund. Everything else came along during the development of the app.”
React Native and AWS Amplify
However, there were certain technical challenges, including “working with some of the services that were not familiar to us at the time,” Bojan admits. “Before we started with this project, we were still experimenting a lot, and often switching between different technologies.
Eventually, we established our tech stack which we are still using today.” React Native was used for the app, the backend was built with AWS and AWS Amplify.
AWS, and Amplify in particular, impressed Bojan: “This project got me a little bit more into AWS world, and I would recommend for everyone who is using AWS services to give Amplify a chance. It is a great toolset containing almost everything you need for developing this kind of application.”
